SpaceX Acquires Cursor for $60 Billion to Boost AI Race Against OpenAI and Anthropic
SpaceX has announced a landmark $60 billion acquisition of AI coding startup Cursor, marking one of the largest deals ever involving a venture-backed technology company and signaling Elon Musk’s growing ambitions in the artificial intelligence sector. The acquisition is aimed at strengthening SpaceX’s AI capabilities and intensifying competition with industry leaders such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
Cursor, developed by San Francisco-based company Anysphere, has emerged as one of the fastest-growing AI coding platforms in the world. The tool is widely used by software developers to generate, edit, and optimize code using artificial intelligence, helping popularize the “vibe coding” trend that has transformed software development workflows over the past year.
Under the agreement, Cursor will become a wholly owned subsidiary of SpaceX once the transaction closes, which is expected during the third quarter of 2026. The acquisition will be completed entirely through SpaceX stock rather than cash.
The deal follows a strategic partnership announced earlier this year between SpaceX and Cursor. That arrangement gave SpaceX the option to either acquire the company outright for $60 billion or pay $10 billion for collaborative AI development efforts. The acquisition indicates that SpaceX sees long-term value in bringing Cursor’s technology and engineering talent directly into its expanding AI ecosystem.
Industry analysts believe the purchase is primarily designed to strengthen Grok, the AI model developed by xAI, which merged with SpaceX earlier this year. While Grok has gained attention in the AI market, it continues to face stiff competition from coding-focused AI systems developed by OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Cursor’s expertise in AI-assisted software development could provide SpaceX with a significant advantage in improving its models and attracting enterprise customers.
Founded in 2022 by a group of Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduates, Cursor has experienced explosive growth. The platform has attracted millions of developers worldwide and generated billions of dollars in annualized revenue, making it one of Silicon Valley’s most valuable AI startups. Investors in the company include major venture capital firms and technology-focused funds that have backed some of the industry’s biggest success stories.
The acquisition comes just days after SpaceX completed its historic initial public offering, which propelled the company to a valuation exceeding $2 trillion. By adding Cursor to its portfolio, SpaceX is expanding beyond aerospace and satellite technology into one of the most competitive segments of the AI industry.
As competition intensifies among major AI companies, the acquisition underscores the increasing importance of AI-powered developer tools and the strategic value of platforms that can accelerate software creation. For SpaceX, Cursor could become a key asset in its effort to close the gap with rivals and establish a stronger foothold in the rapidly evolving AI market.
