Android Phones to Get New Blue Dot Privacy Indicator for Location Tracking

Android users will soon notice a new blue dot appearing in the status bar of their smartphones, as Google rolls out an additional privacy feature designed to increase transparency around location tracking. The feature aims to help users easily identify when an app is actively accessing their location data.

The new indicator will appear alongside existing privacy alerts already familiar to Android users. While a green dot signals that an app is using the device’s camera and microphone, and an orange dot indicates microphone activity on some devices, the blue dot specifically shows when an application is accessing location services.

According to reports, the blue dot can alert users to both foreground and background location access. This means users will be able to quickly determine if an app is tracking their location even when it is not actively open on the screen. By tapping the indicator, users can identify which application is currently using their location.

Google first introduced the feature in Android 16 QPR3 for supported Pixel devices and is expected to expand availability more broadly through Android 17. The move is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to strengthen privacy protections and give users greater visibility into how apps access sensitive information.

The addition mirrors privacy features already implemented for camera and microphone access, allowing users to better monitor app permissions and detect unusual activity that could impact privacy or battery life. Location services are among the most power-intensive smartphone functions, making transparency particularly important for both security and performance.

Users who wish to review or restrict location permissions can do so through their device’s privacy settings, where they can see which apps have access to location data and modify permissions as needed.
