Georgia Election 2026: Trump Influence Tested as Mike Collins Faces Jon Ossoff
Georgia’s high-stakes Republican runoff elections delivered mixed results for President Donald Trump, highlighting both his continued influence within the GOP and the limits of his political endorsements ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
In the closely watched U.S. Senate runoff, Republican voters chose Mike Collins as their nominee, setting up a November showdown against Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff. Collins secured victory over former college football coach Derek Dooley after receiving a late endorsement from Trump.
The result is viewed as a significant win for Trump, who publicly backed Collins just days before the runoff. Collins, a conservative congressman and trucking executive, had already led the initial primary vote in May and strengthened his position after earning the president’s support.
However, the night was not a complete triumph for Trump. In Georgia’s Republican gubernatorial runoff, his preferred candidate failed to secure the nomination, dealing the president one of his most notable primary setbacks of the 2026 election cycle. The outcome underscored ongoing divisions within Georgia’s Republican establishment, where outgoing Governor Brian Kemp remains a powerful political figure.
The Senate race is expected to become one of the most expensive and closely watched contests in the country. Republicans see Georgia as one of their best opportunities to expand their Senate majority, while Democrats view Ossoff as a strong incumbent capable of holding the seat despite the state voting for Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
Ossoff enters the general election with a substantial financial advantage, having raised tens of millions of dollars and built one of the strongest campaign war chests among Senate Democrats. Collins, meanwhile, will seek to unite Georgia Republicans and capitalize on Trump’s popularity among the party’s base.
Political analysts expect the Georgia Senate contest to attract significant national attention, with both parties preparing for a fierce battle that could help determine the balance of power in Washington after the November elections.
