China Arrests US Academic Min Zin on Espionage Allegations

China has confirmed the arrest of an American academic and Myanmar expert, Min Zin, on allegations of espionage, in a case that could add fresh strain to efforts by Beijing and Washington to stabilize relations.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian announced on Friday that Min Zin is being held on suspicion of “engaging in espionage activities that endanger China’s national security.” Authorities have placed him under criminal detention, although details surrounding the allegations remain limited.

Min Zin, a Myanmar-born US citizen, is widely known for his research on Myanmar’s politics, Chinese foreign policy, and regional affairs. He is also associated with a Myanmar-focused think tank and has pursued doctoral studies in political science in the United States.

According to reports, Min Zin disappeared on June 3 after traveling to Kunming, the capital of China’s Yunnan Province, to attend a conference. Activists familiar with the situation said he had previously visited China numerous times without incident.

The arrest is considered unusual because China rarely detains American citizens on national security or espionage charges. Chinese officials said the United States Consulate General in Guangzhou had been notified of the detention in accordance with diplomatic procedures.

Human rights advocates have expressed concern over the case. International rights organizations have called for transparency regarding Min Zin’s detention and access to legal representation, warning that national security cases in China often involve limited public disclosure.

The development comes only weeks after a high-profile meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, where both sides signaled a desire to improve ties after years of diplomatic and economic tensions. Analysts say the arrest could complicate those efforts and increase scrutiny of academic exchanges between the two countries.

Neither Chinese authorities nor US officials have publicly disclosed evidence supporting the espionage allegations. The case is expected to attract significant international attention as Washington seeks further information about the circumstances surrounding Min Zin’s detention.
