Apple CEO Tim Cook Steps Down as John Ternus Takes Over in Major Leadership Shakeup

Apple has announced a major leadership transition, confirming that CEO Tim Cook will step down from his role and be succeeded by John Ternus. The change will take effect on September 1, with Cook moving into the position of executive chairman of the board.

In a statement released Monday, Cook described leading Apple Inc. as the greatest honor of his career. He expressed strong confidence in Ternus, highlighting his engineering expertise, innovative mindset, and leadership qualities as key strengths that position him to guide the company into its next phase.

Ternus, who joined Apple in 2001, has played a significant role in shaping several of the company’s flagship products. Over the years, he has contributed to the development of devices such as the iPad, AirPods, and Apple Watch. He was promoted to vice president of Hardware Engineering in 2013 and has since been a key figure in Apple’s product innovation strategy.

Responding to his appointment, John Ternus said he is honored to take on the role and continue advancing Apple’s mission. He acknowledged the influence of both Cook and Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, noting that their leadership helped shape his journey within the company. He also expressed optimism about Apple’s future, emphasizing the strength and talent of its global workforce.

Cook’s transition comes after more than a decade as CEO, a period during which Apple experienced remarkable growth. Since taking over in 2011, he has overseen the company’s expansion from a market value of around $350 billion to approximately $4 trillion, cementing its position as one of the world’s most valuable companies.

Just weeks before the announcement, Cook reflected on Apple’s journey during an interview with Michael Strahan on “Good Morning America,” marking the company’s 50th anniversary. He pointed to Apple’s impact across industries, from transforming music and smartphones to advancing health technology through wearable devices.

Despite previously dismissing speculation about stepping down, Cook now passes the leadership baton as Apple prepares for a new era under Ternus, signaling continuity in innovation and long-term growth strategy.
