A California man accused of opening fire at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner has been identified as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old tutor and aspiring video game developer from Torrance, California, whose writings and online presence suggest strong opposition to President Donald Trump’s administration.
Officials say Allen was arrested Saturday night in Washington after allegedly attempting to breach security at the high-profile event attended by Trump and senior government officials. Investigators say he was armed with two guns and knives when taken into custody.
According to social media profiles and public records, Allen had spent the past six years working part-time for an educational company that provides college admissions guidance and test preparation. Shortly before the attack, authorities say he sent a lengthy message to family members describing himself with a militant nickname while expressing anger over recent U.S. government actions.
The message reportedly combined personal reflections, apologies, political frustration, religious reasoning, and farewell statements, shifting between emotional confession and ideological grievance. Investigators say the document also appeared to respond to perceived critics while attempting to justify his actions.
Allen, who reportedly has no prior criminal record, is expected to face multiple federal charges, including using a firearm during a violent crime and assaulting a federal officer.
Authorities say he legally purchased a 38-caliber semiautomatic handgun in 2023 and a shotgun in 2025.
Public records show Allen lived at his parents’ home in Torrance, one of Los Angeles County’s historic residential areas. On Sunday, federal agents were seen canvassing the neighborhood. Campaign finance records indicate he made a small donation to a Democratic political action committee supporting Kamala Harris in 2024.
Allen’s academic background has also drawn attention. He recently earned a master’s degree in computer science from California State University, Dominguez Hills, after previously graduating from the California Institute of Technology with a mechanical engineering degree. Former professors described him as intelligent, polite, and academically driven, expressing shock over the allegations.
His online profiles also suggest interests in Christian fellowship, game development, and science-based software design, including projects involving chemistry and space combat gaming.
Allen’s father is reportedly a church elder at a conservative Christian congregation in Torrance, where security was heightened following the incident.
The case has intensified scrutiny over political extremism, mental health concerns, and security vulnerabilities surrounding one of Washington’s most prominent annual gatherings.
