Southern Africa has one of the most varied live music calendars in the world. In a single season you can hear jazz in a Namibian stadium, dance to electronic sets in the Western Cape’s farmland, ring in the new year a short walk from Victoria Falls and watch a desert city rise in the Karoo.
This guide covers the biggest music festivals in Southern Africa from late 2026 through 2027. “Biggest” here means a mix of crowd size, reputation and regional pull, not a strict ranking. Where organisers have published attendance figures, we cite them. Where a date has not been announced, we say so plainly instead of guessing, because festival plans in this region can and do change.

The biggest music festivals, in date order
Windhoek Jazz Festival, Namibia (7 November 2026)
Namibia’s capital hosts its jazz festival on 7 November 2026. Organisers say this edition focuses on a fuller festival atmosphere, with food and drink, local vendor stalls and networking alongside the music. The full line-up had not been released at the time of writing, but the programme is expected to mix jazz artists, tribute acts, contemporary musicians and Namibian performers. Previous editions have been held at the Hage Geingob stadium in Windhoek, and the 2025 edition was headlined by South African jazz veteran Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse.
Best for: jazz fans who want a one-day city festival without a long camping trip.
Stanbic Acácia Jazz Festival, Mozambique (November 2026)
Standard Bank’s 2026 Africa Music Series guide lists this Maputo festival for November 2026. It is known for pairing emerging musicians with established international names. A specific date was not published in the guide, so check the festival’s official channels before booking flights.
Best for: travellers combining a Maputo city break with live jazz.
Afrobiza Sandton, South Africa (12 December 2026)
A one-day afro house festival in Sandton, Johannesburg, built around the idea of bringing an Ibiza-style daytime party to Gauteng. It falls in peak Highveld summer, so expect afternoon storms and long evenings.
Best for: afro house and amapiano-adjacent dance fans based in or visiting Johannesburg.
Victoria Falls Carnival, Zimbabwe (29–31 December 2026)
The carnival has returned to its original year-end slot, running 29–31 December 2026 in Victoria Falls town, according to a September 2026 travel report. The reported format builds from a steam-train party on the first day, to a colour party on the second, to an all-night New Year’s Eve festival. The town sits minutes from one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, and Victoria Falls airport connects through Johannesburg and other regional hubs. In past years, reports put the crowd at more than 5,000 visitors, which makes it intimate compared with the giants below but one of the region’s best-known New Year’s trips.
Best for: a bucket-list New Year’s Eve combined with a safari or waterfall trip. Book accommodation early: this is the busiest week of the year for the town.
Little Forest Festival and other New Year’s festivals, South Africa (31 December 2026 – 2 January 2027)
The Little Forest Festival (also billed as Alien Safari) runs on a farm near Riviersonderend in the Western Cape, with psychedelic trance and electronic music. South Africa’s New Year calendar also includes several other multi-day camping events, so compare line-ups and facilities before you commit.
Best for: psytrance and electronic fans who like camping.
Wolfkop Weekender, South Africa (14–18 January 2027)
Held on the banks of the Olifants River near Citrusdal, Wolfkop brings several of the area’s well-loved river and picnic events together into one celebration of nature, art and electronic music.
Best for: riverside camping and a relaxed Cederberg setting.
Up The Creek, South Africa (11–14 February 2027)
One of South Africa’s longest-running summer festivals, Up The Creek has been going for more than three decades. It takes place near Swellendam on the R62 route and is known for its live bands and laid-back campsite atmosphere.
Best for: live-band lovers and groups of friends who want a classic South African summer festival.
Bazique, South Africa (5–7 March 2027)
Bazique is a three-day mix of music and art near Tulbagh, organised by a collective of promoters and built around the surreal and the unconventional. It is a good pick if you want a festival that feels more like an art event than a standard line-up.
Best for: electronic music fans who enjoy installations and costume.
Cape Town International Jazz Festival, South Africa (March 2027)
The festival often called “Africa’s Grandest Gathering” is changing shape for its 24th edition. Instead of a single weekend, the 2027 edition will spread across the whole of March, with reports describing two main weekends and three community concerts, and programming reaching beyond Cape Town. The organisers have said that artist, venue and ticketing details will be released in the coming months. The 2026 edition took place on 27–28 March at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
Best for: serious jazz fans and anyone who wants to build a longer Cape Town trip around live music. Watch the official festival website for dates.
HIFA, Zimbabwe (26 April – 2 May 2027)
The Harare International Festival of the Arts, founded in 1999, was scheduled to return in August 2026 after an eight-year break. Organisers later postponed that comeback edition to allow more time to prepare. Earlier announcements had set 2027 for 26 April – 2 May and 2028 for 1–7 May, but because of the postponement you should confirm the 2027 dates with the organisers before making plans.
Best for: travellers who want theatre, dance and music in one week and are flexible with plans.
Ultra South Africa, South Africa (30 April and 1 May 2027)
Ultra South Africa is the region’s best-known electronic dance festival and is part of the global Ultra series. The 2027 edition is listed as two single-day events: Cape Town on Friday 30 April at The Ostrich, and Johannesburg on Saturday 1 May at the Expo Centre in Nasrec. The 2027 line-up had not been announced at the time of writing. Reported attendance for the 2025 edition was around 55,000 people, which makes it one of the largest single music events in the region.
Best for: big-stage electronic music with international headliners.
AfrikaBurn, South Africa (26 April – 2 May 2027)
AfrikaBurn is a week-long, participant-built temporary town in the Tankwa Karoo, run on Burning Man principles. It is not a conventional ticketed line-up festival: music, art, costume and theme camps all come from participants. It is included here because it draws a large community every year and has a strong music element. Preparation matters more than at any other event on this list, because you must bring everything you need to survive in the desert.
Best for: adventurous, self-sufficient travellers who want to take part, not just watch.
MTN Bushfire, Eswatini (usually late May)
Bushfire is widely regarded as the region’s flagship pan-African festival. The 19th edition ran from 29 to 31 May 2026 at House On Fire in the Malkerns Valley. Organisers have reported more than 23,000 festival-goers from over 55 countries in recent years. Tickets for the 2026 edition went on sale in October 2025, so 2027 announcements may land around the same time. We could not find confirmed 2027 dates yet.
Best for: travellers who want music, arts and a strong sustainability focus in a beautiful valley setting.
Lake of Stars, Malawi (usually September or October)
First held in 2004, Lake of Stars takes place on the shores of Lake Malawi. The 2026 edition was scheduled for 2–4 October in Nkhotakota under the theme “Festivals with Purpose.” The 2027 dates have not been announced.
Best for: beach-side camping, a pan-African line-up and a Malawi trip.
Festivals that changed plans
Two major South African names will not follow their usual pattern this season, which is worth knowing if you were planning around them:
- Rocking the Daisies: the 2026 edition planned for early October at Cloof Wine Estate was cancelled, with organisers citing unforeseen circumstances. They partnered with IN THE CITY on one-day shows in Cape Town and Johannesburg instead. We found no confirmed 2027 festival dates.
- Calabash South Africa: the 2026 stadium shows were cancelled, and organisers have not confirmed a 2027 edition yet.
If you are travelling for a specific festival, always check the official website and social channels in the final weeks before you book non-refundable travel.
Other festivals worth watching
- Zambia: the Mosi Day of Thunder in Livingstone has drawn thousands of fans in recent years (over 9,000 in 2023, according to local reporting). We found no confirmed 2027 date, so follow the organisers. A Stanbic Music Festival in Lusaka was listed for October 2026 as unconfirmed.
- Zimbabwe: the Jacaranda Music Festival in Harare was listed for October 2026.
- Botswana: the Gaborone-based Diamond City Jazz Festival launched as a new event, and Maun hosts a New Year’s Eve party at Crocodile Camp that organisers say they plan to grow.
- Lesotho: the Lesotho Tourism Festival (LETOFE) in Maseru was listed for December 2026.
- Mozambique: Azgo in Maputo has run for years in May, and the Marrabenta Festival celebrates the country’s signature sound. We could not confirm 2027 dates for either.
Final thoughts
The 2026 to 2027 season has a festival for almost every taste: jazz in Windhoek and Cape Town, New Year’s celebrations at Victoria Falls, desert culture at AfrikaBurn, and large stages at Ultra and Bushfire. The smartest approach is to pick two or three events, set alerts for their ticket announcements and keep your travel plans flexible until dates are locked in.
