Kapiri Mposhi Cop Arrested After Allegedly Shooting Wife
A 30-year-old police constable has been arrested for attempted murder after allegedly shooting his wife during an altercation in Kapiri Mposhi, Central Province.
Central Province Police Commanding Officer Lemekani Chirwa identified the suspect as Jonathan Miyoba, 30, and the victim as Gladys Milala, 26. Both are reported to be from East Park Compound in Kapiri Mposhi.
According to police, the incident happened at around 02:10 hours at Valley View Compound after the couple reportedly became involved in an argument.
Police said Miyoba had earlier withdrawn an AK-47 rifle containing 10 rounds of ammunition for guard duties at CAMCO premises.
At about 21:30 hours on September 13, the officer allegedly contacted his wife to find out where she was. Milala reportedly told him that she was at a market with her elder sister, Pecevia Milala, 36, collecting planks for their joint business.
Police said Miyoba subsequently left his duty post and went to the market in search of his wife. After failing to find her there, he reportedly went to her sister’s house in Valley View, where she was also not present.
The officer allegedly remained in the area until around 02:00 hours, when his wife returned with her sister.
Police said an altercation then broke out between the couple, during which Miyoba allegedly fired three rounds from the rifle.
One of the bullets struck Gladys in the abdomen, causing serious injuries.
Her sister, Pecevia, is reported to have managed to disarm the officer and secured the firearm inside the house before taking Gladys to Kapiri Mposhi District Hospital.
Police later recovered the weapon and took it to Kapiri Mposhi Police Station.
An inspection of the firearm reportedly found seven rounds of ammunition remaining, indicating that three rounds had been discharged.
Police officers who visited the victim at the hospital observed that she had sustained a gunshot wound to the upper abdomen. Due to the seriousness of her condition, she was referred to Kabwe Central Hospital for specialised medical treatment.
Miyoba has since been arrested and is being investigated for attempted murder.
Police have not indicated whether additional charges will be brought as investigations continue.
