Mandevu to Hold Fresh MP Election After Results Centre Attack
Voters in Mandevu Constituency will have to return to the polls to elect a Member of Parliament after the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) resolved to hold a fresh parliamentary election.
The decision follows a serious security incident that disrupted the aggregation of National Assembly election results following Zambia’s General Elections held on August 13, 2026.
ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro said the Commission received an official report from the Lusaka District Electoral Officer dated August 18, 2026, detailing an attack at the Mandevu Constituency totalling centre.
According to Kasaro, unknown individuals allegedly attacked the centre while election results were being aggregated.
The individuals reportedly destroyed result transmission kits before leaving with election documentation. As a result, the Returning Officer was unable to complete the required process and declare the National Assembly election results for the constituency.
The disruption meant the electoral process could not be concluded in accordance with the established procedures.
Following consideration of the incident, the ECZ resolved that a fresh parliamentary election should be conducted in Mandevu Constituency.
Kasaro confirmed the decision in a statement issued to ZNBC News, saying the date for the fresh election will be communicated by the Commission in due course.
The ECZ has not yet announced when voters will return to the polling stations or provided details of the electoral timetable for the fresh contest.
The development means Mandevu residents will have another opportunity to choose their representative in the National Assembly after the original parliamentary election process was disrupted.
The forthcoming election is expected to attract significant attention as political parties and candidates prepare for another contest in one of Lusaka’s constituencies.
For now, voters will have to wait for the ECZ to announce the official date and provide further guidance on the arrangements for the fresh parliamentary election.
