FDA Approves Updated COVID-19 Vaccines for 2026–27 Season
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved updated COVID-19 vaccines for the 2026–27 season, with the new formulations designed to better match the SARS-CoV-2 strains currently circulating in the United States.
The approvals announced on August 27 cover updated vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Novavax-Sanofi. The updated formulations target the XFG lineage, which federal health officials had selected as the preferred strain for the upcoming vaccination season.
The FDA had previously advised manufacturers to develop a monovalent vaccine based on the JN.1 lineage XFG variant for use beginning in fall 2026. The agency said its recommendation was based on available information about circulating variants, vaccine effectiveness, immune responses and other scientific evidence.
The latest approval comes as COVID-19 continues to evolve, requiring vaccine manufacturers to periodically update formulations to better correspond with circulating virus strains.
According to current FDA information, the approved COVID-19 vaccines in the United States include products from Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Sanofi, with the specific eligibility and age ranges varying by vaccine.
The new approvals are also significant because COVID-19 vaccination policy in the United States has undergone changes over the past year.
The FDA says the 2026–27 vaccine formulation was developed after its advisory committee reviewed data on the circulation of SARS-CoV-2 variants, the effectiveness of existing vaccines and available immunogenicity evidence.
