Apple’s arrival in the foldable smartphone market is putting renewed attention on a part of foldable phones that can be just as important as the hardware: software.

After years of Android manufacturers experimenting with foldable designs, Apple has entered the category with the new iPhone Duo. Android Police argues that Apple’s approach highlights how software integration can determine whether a foldable feels like a genuinely useful device rather than simply a phone with a flexible display.

Foldable smartphones have become increasingly sophisticated, with manufacturers improving hinges, displays, multitasking and durability. However, the software experience has remained one of the biggest areas where manufacturers continue to differentiate themselves.

Apple’s entry gives the company an opportunity to apply its tightly controlled hardware-and-software development model to a form factor that Android manufacturers have been refining for years.

Apple’s Approach Focuses on the Foldable Experience

A major challenge with foldable phones is making the transition between different screen configurations feel natural.

When a device changes from a conventional smartphone into a larger display, applications need to adapt without forcing users to constantly adjust settings or restart their workflow.

Apple’s advantage, according to the Android Police analysis, comes from controlling both the iPhone’s hardware and operating system. That allows the company to design software features specifically around the foldable form factor instead of relying primarily on developers and Android’s broader ecosystem to support different devices.

Android Manufacturers Have Had Years to Experiment

Samsung, Google and other Android manufacturers have spent years developing foldable smartphones.

Samsung, in particular, has helped establish the modern foldable phone category, introducing multiple generations of Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Z Fold devices.

That experience has allowed Android manufacturers to develop features such as split-screen multitasking, app continuity and larger-screen productivity tools.

But Android’s diverse hardware ecosystem also creates a different challenge. Developers must account for numerous screen sizes, aspect ratios, hinges and software implementations.

Apple’s more limited hardware lineup gives it a different development environment.

Software Could Become the Next Foldable Battleground

Foldable hardware is becoming increasingly mature. Displays are thinner, hinges are more sophisticated and manufacturers have become better at reducing the visible crease.

As those hardware differences become less dramatic, software could become a bigger factor in how consumers evaluate foldable devices.

Features such as automatic app resizing, multitasking, drag-and-drop functionality and continuity between screens can determine whether a larger foldable display provides meaningful advantages.

The Android Police analysis suggests that Apple’s implementation could force Android manufacturers to reconsider how their software handles the unique capabilities of foldable devices.

Apple’s Ecosystem Could Give It Another Advantage

Apple’s broader ecosystem could also play an important role.

The company already connects the iPhone with products and services such as Macs, iPads, Apple Watch and AirPods. A foldable iPhone therefore enters an ecosystem where users are already accustomed to Apple’s approach to continuity and cross-device functionality.

That does not automatically mean Apple’s software approach will work better for every user. Android manufacturers offer their own ecosystem integrations and productivity features, while Android’s openness allows manufacturers to experiment with different form factors.

Instead, Apple’s entry introduces another major software philosophy into an already competitive foldable market.

The Foldable Market Is Entering a New Phase

Apple’s arrival represents a significant development for foldable smartphones because the company has historically been able to influence broader industry trends through its approach to product design and software integration.

The competition is therefore no longer only about who can build the thinnest foldable, reduce the display crease or create the strongest hinge.

The way these devices behave when opened, closed and used across different applications could become equally important.

For Android manufacturers, Apple’s foldable iPhone creates another benchmark to consider. For consumers, increased competition could mean more experimentation and increasingly refined foldable software experiences in the years ahead.
