The withdrawal of the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) from the Tonse Alliance has triggered fresh uncertainty over the future of the opposition coalition and the position of lawmakers elected under the party’s ticket.
NRPUP announced its immediate departure from the alliance after consultations over the political situation following Zambia’s August 13 general election. The move comes at a critical time, with the opposition coalition facing questions over its planned challenge to the presidential election outcome.
The withdrawal has also raised concerns about whether Members of Parliament elected on the NRPUP platform could face pressure or possible disciplinary action as the party separates itself from the alliance.
Political split creates uncertainty for MPs
NRPUP emerged from the election as a significant parliamentary force, reportedly securing more than 60 seats. That performance transformed the party from a relatively small political player into one of the major forces in the new National Assembly.
The party’s decision to leave Tonse therefore has implications beyond the alliance’s presidential campaign.
Questions are now being raised over whether MPs elected under the NRPUP banner will continue supporting the Tonse Alliance’s political and legal programme or follow the party leadership’s new direction.
The issue is particularly sensitive because the alliance has been pursuing a challenge to President Hakainde Hichilema’s re-election, while NRPUP has taken a different position on the presidential result.
NRPUP takes a different position on election outcome
The party has congratulated Hichilema and the United Party for National Development on their electoral victory, signalling a departure from the position of sections of the Tonse Alliance.
The alliance had backed Brian Mundubile as its presidential candidate and maintained that the election result should be subjected to legal scrutiny.
NRPUP’s position has consequently created an internal divide over whether the opposition coalition should proceed with a presidential petition.
The withdrawal could make it more difficult for Tonse to maintain a unified position as the constitutional window for challenging the election result becomes increasingly important.
Tonse faces a major test
The latest development represents one of the most significant challenges to the cohesion of the Tonse Alliance since the election.
The coalition now has to determine whether it can continue functioning without one of its major political components and whether the remaining parties can maintain a common strategy.

NRPUP has said its decision does not amount to abandoning opposition politics. Instead, the party has indicated that it intends to operate independently while pursuing its own political agenda.

One of the most closely watched questions is the status of MPs associated with NRPUP who were elected while the party was part of the Tonse Alliance.
