Mundubile, Makebi Zulu Questioned by Police Over Security Claims

Opposition figures Brian Mundubile and Makebi Zulu have been handed over to the Zambia Police for questioning as authorities investigate activities they allege may pose a threat to national security.

The two opposition leaders were taken to police on Thursday, August 27, for interviews, with their lawyers reportedly present during the proceedings.

Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi confirmed that the two were being interviewed as part of an ongoing investigation. He said police would provide further information after the interviews.

The specific allegations under investigation have not yet been publicly disclosed, and police have not indicated whether Mundubile or Zulu will face criminal charges.

Their questioning should therefore be understood as part of an ongoing investigation rather than evidence that either individual has been found guilty of wrongdoing.

Before their handover to police, Mundubile and Zulu had reportedly been under United Nations protection in Lusaka.

Their transfer comes against the backdrop of heightened political tensions following Zambia’s 2026 general election, with the two men among prominent opposition figures involved in the country’s post-election political developments.

The involvement of lawyers during the police interviews ensures that the opposition figures have legal representation as authorities conduct their inquiries.

Police are expected to issue a statement after completing the interviews, which could provide further details about the nature of the investigation and whether any action will be taken.

The development is likely to attract significant political attention given Mundubile and Zulu’s positions within Zambia’s opposition landscape.

It also comes as political parties and government institutions continue to navigate disagreements surrounding the post-election period.

Authorities have maintained that matters involving potential breaches of the law should be handled through established legal processes, while opposition figures and their supporters continue to closely monitor developments.

For now, the key outstanding questions are what specific activities prompted the investigation, whether any offences are alleged, and what decision police will make following the interviews.

Further developments are expected once the Zambia Police issue their official statement.
